The mysterious case of Maxwel Cornet
|
Maxwel returned from his long term calf injury and declared himself ready for action at the end of March after 45 minutes for the U23s and 42 minutes as a sub during the tie with Larnaca, many said on here he'd be like a new signing. Obviously he'd have to get match fit but with games coming thick & fast that shouldn't be an issue or so we thought.
This is his record since those appearances at the end of March and it begs the question is Moyes holding him back, for whatever reason or is he another player not to be trusted?

It was odd he didn't get a run out against Man City. A player with genuine pace goes against all of Moyes's defensive principles.

I agree with most of what you say Russ except Antonio has improved recently.
Most importantly he should not be our only option but for Ings or an as yet unproven Cornet.
It is incompetence on Moyes part, to have placed us in this position for a few years now. We can all agree on that

Antonio is better than Cornet, even in his late career.

Antonio has been a great servant for us. No doubt.
But his performances, form and productivity dropped off a fucking cliff when he landed back in the UK after playing so well for Jamaica. That was back in November 2021. He has, in general, been poor to average since then.
So why the fuck on earth is he still our best striker and our main focal point almost 18 months later?
I'll tell you why. Because David Moyes is an incompetent moron who plays dinosaur football and has no idea how to change. It's also because we have owners that no nothing about football, do no future planning and have no clue which direction they want to go.
As much as Antonio pisses me off, it's not his fault. If he had been at a well run clue be would've been sold a year ago. He would be part of our history. Yet, here we are, languishing around the bottom of the PL, with this buffalo playing kick, run and fall. It's fucking embarrassing.
And when you dissect why we are where we are you look at him as one the many reasons. But, again, not his fault. He shouldn't even be at the club.

Antonio is the best striker we have. Cornet may be better but until Moyes gives him a decent run anything else is a guess but Scamacca is out and Ings should never have been in.

Moyes was trying to get Broja to replace Antonio, or at least compete with him, right? Who knows how that would have gone had we signed him.
If god forbid Moyes stays we obviously need an upgrade, but who would that player be, ie an improved clone of Antonio? If as expected Moyes goes we would have to assume we will be playing differently up front next season, which presumably would make Antonio surplus as the no 9. Maybe he'll be pushed out wide, on the bench or leaves. Who knows.

Considering Ings is one of the two Sullivan punts (along with Benrahma), then you do wonder what Moyes saw in Cornet to buy him and never play him.
Mind you, this is the same bloke who bigged up Kral as a player to watch in the Euros, then went and brought him to the club, and then never played him.

Russ - yet we still play best with him, because of the one dimensional dinosaur. Mental how he does everything you say and we look better as a team. Don't get me wrong he has the odd good game like Arsenal but they're not as often as they were.
So why in the name of merry fuck does Moyes not give Cornet a run out against City instead of Ings

Antonio should not be the focal point for our attacks, as he's simply just not consistent enough for it.....he'll have his days but we play for a season....

Do me a favour. You think Antonio is good?
He's a fucking bag of shit. He can't control a fucking tractor. He's got no awareness and spends more time trying to run through people and falling on the floor. When he sits there and puts his hands up for a foul I just want to kick him in the fucking face.
Absolute terrible top level player.

RM10 - to be fair you think all our new foreign signing are shit from the day they signed. Cornet hadn't had any minutes or chance to integrate in the team, what are you basing your opinion on?
A month ago you said Paqueta is shit, do you still think so?

Cornet on the left, bowen on the right Antonio and Ings upfront
That would get us goals

Antonio is just a very muscular, battering ram who runs around like Pumba from the lion king or the Tazmanian Devil? No control or technique but can cause problems for a few teams. Never a central striker but best we’ve got for Moyes 1990s hoof ball tactics

Yeah five prem goals from 12 shots on target, monster player.
"Michail Antonio averages 9 passes per match with a pass completion rate of 58%, and has 3 assists."
Fuckin ell, its the second coming of Batifuckingstuta.

I'd like to see him play alongside Antonio either in the starting lineup or bring them both off the bench at the same time.

As mentioned below, perhaps Moyes is simply not that bright ? Hence his primitive tactics and inability to change and see or accept his own failings?
His decisions, selections and tactics are just bizarre.

Re: The mysterious case of Maxwel Cornet

Personally I don't understand the thinking behind leaving Cornet on the bench and bringing on Ings for Antonio. Cornet is similar to Antonio in terms of speed etc and Ings has never been the lone striker closing down I'm sure we would get more of a tune out of Cornet if he was given the minutes to build his fitness back up and before his injury he was starting to gel in the team and causing a few problems. No doubt another player that Moyes will ruin Man City away was the perfect game to give him a chance to do something and he was left out AGAIN

Re: The mysterious case of Maxwel Cornet

If we keep Moyes on after this season then we deserve what we get which will probably be relegation.
The signs are there that Moyes is useless one trick pony as a tactician.
He’s useless at buying players to fit a pattern.
He flogs his favourites and ignores so many players unless absolutely necessary.
His substitutions are a mystery and often illogical and too late to make any difference.
Keeping Moyes in place is going to set WH back years. Sort twoleftfeet and others but Moyes is toxic

Totally agree. I'm certaily not saying we should have bought him but someone like Traore from Wolves would have made more sense than Ings. He wouldn't have scored a lot of goals but at least you would have had a similar bulldozer to Antonio top bring on!
